Saucony Tempus Review
Saucony Tempus
With the Hurricane on it’s way out, the Tempus is stepping up to the plate. This shoe was originally slated for a January 1st release, but due to supply chain issues it was released in June. See below for why this shoe is going to be a perfect go to option for our stability runners.
This shoe uses an adaptive guidance system that’s different from any other stability shoe out on the market right now. The crux of the shoe’s stability comes from it’s PWRRUN frame. This frame makes for a stable ride without overbulking the shoe. At 8.9 ounces for men this shoe comes in as one of the lightest options in the support category. It also comes with the standard 8 mm offset that the majority of Saucony running shoes have, which is a nice middle ground for how high your heel sits. Saucony shoes also tend to have a wider forefoot that accommodates forefoot strikers well.
This is like a more training-esque Endorphin Speed with some guidance components.
Review:
I’ve put about 54 miles on this shoe already in the span of 2 weeks. It’s been a while since I’ve ran in a stability shoe that keeps me coming back for more like the Tempus does. The foam is soft and absorbent on landing but propels forward super well for a non-plated shoe. This is due to the PRWRUN PB foam that is also seen in their high-performance racers like the Endorphin Pro 3. The shoe is light weight and makes picking up my knees significantly easier than traditional guidance/stability shoes.
My two biggest workouts to date in this shoe were an 18 mile long run and a 10-mile fartlek. On my 18 miler I was super appreciative of the lightweight, breathable upper. In most shoes my feet get super toasty and soaked by the end of a run. My feet were still drenched in these by the end, but I noticed the insole was not sliding and I could feel airflow in the front of the shoe where the upper opens. Also noticed that my level of soreness the next day was not as high as it normally is, which I attribute to the PWRRUN PB foam’s absorbency. My 10 mile fartlek was also great. This is the first time in years since I’ve ran a hard effort in a non-plated shoe and this was responsive enough to help me keep 10k race pace on a grass course with ease.
Who should wear this shoe?
I think this shoe would be an excellent choice for any stability or neutral runner that is looking to get away from the traditional bulky support shoe and get into something a touch faster without completely removing a support system. This shoe would also be a great option for someone looking to try a super shoe that doesn’t have a carbon plate. The PWRRUN PB is responsive enough to give any neutral or support runner the kind of propulsion they need to take their runs to a faster level. This would be a great trainer as well for someone that is looking for a solid long run shoe to get them through fast. It’s versatile enough to also be used for a solid racing shoe for anything from 5k to marathon. This could also be a long distance racing shoe for someone who needs a little more support or sensitive to plates.
