Altra Lone Peak 5 Review

To start off I was really happy that I got the opportunity to do a review on the Altra Lone Peak 5. I have some history with the Lone Peak 3 and Lone Peak 4, which I have enjoyed running and hiking in.  I have completed several races in multiple distances, from 5Ks to 100 miles, in variety of terrain, from flat, crushed gravel to technical trails with rocks, roots, mud, cactus, etc… in the Lone Peak.   I couldn’t ask for a better performing shoe and the only issues I had while wearing the Lone Peak was with my lack of athletic prowess.

Let’s Get Started

Missouri-Trails

I was able to get the Lone Peak 5 on Friday, January 29th, and when I put it on it felt great with its wide toe box and responsive mid-sole cushioning.  I ran exclusively in the Lone Peak 5 for about two weeks and put in over 80 miles with running and walking.  Since I was testing out a trail shoe, I wanted to make sure I ran on a variety of terrain and a majority of my running was off road in open fields, cross country and disc golf courses, and some single- track trails.  I was able to find plenty of mud, snow and slick areas to test the Lone Peak 5.  Again, I found the shoe’s performance to be excellent and the only thing holding it back was my conditioning.  I had no issues running along trails with obstacles, the Lone Peak 5 was responsive and light enough for me to avoid falling down.  In sticky, muddy conditions the traction of Lone Peak’s Trail Claws kept me moving and there were no issues going through the snow.  When I did run on pavement, I really enjoyed the cushioning and responsive feel of the Alter Ego midsole.  However, when running on the asphalt/sidewalks the ride was not smooth with the lugs on the outsole, but that is something I expected with a trail shoe.

The Updates

Lone-Peak-5
  • The Lone Peak 5 now has Altra EGO™ foam throughout the midsole. I found the Lone Peak to have the right amount of cushion to help out on longer runs but still provide feedback to my feet on uneven terrain, rocks and roots. I did run in temperatures above and below freezing and did not find any differences in the cushioning.
  • The Toe Cap is now attached to the upper with stitches which adds to the shoe’s durability.
  • The Upper has laser cut drainage holes in the toe cap and lateral side of the heel and is more flexible.
  • Improved, lighter weight stone guard which helps protect the foot from sharp objects.
  • Altra’s Maxtrac outsole is grippy and provides traction over technical terrains as well as being    (My outsole did not show any noticeable wear and there were only superficial markings.)
  • The Lone Peak 5 also comes in a wide size as well as their standard width.

The Specifics

  • Weight: 11.1 oz / 318 g  (Men’s)

  • Weight: 9.2 oz / 260 g (Women’s)
  • Midsole: Altra EGO™
  • Outsole: MaxTrac™
  • Cushion: Moderate
  • Stack Height: 25 mm
  • Upper: Quick-Dry Air Mesh

The Bottom Line

Lone-Peak-5

I enjoyed running/walking in the Lone Peak 5, but what I really appreciate about the shoe is that it was designed to provide feedback to your body while on the trails.  The wide toe box provides ample room for toe splay which is important for keeping balance.  The heel does not contain a stiff heel counter and the shoe is flexible which allows your forefoot and rear foot to move independently when going over rocks, roots and uneven terrain.  I would recommend the Lone Peak 5 for anyone who wants to leave the road behind and explore nature.
